Son of the Wind Production
18 May 2009
Son of the Wind is a multimedia production about two San communities called the !Xun & Khwe living at Platfontein, located about 13k from Kimberley. The play is written and directed by Misty Brodiaea. Craig and Damon Foster of Foster Brother Film are creating all the film sequences for the production. |

Ms Brodiaea came to South Africa as an Education Volunteer for the United States Peace Corps; she has many years of experience as writer, director and actor, but never imagined she would be doing theatre in Africa. She is honored to be working with amazing filmmakers like the Foster Brothers, many talented local artists and with the beautiful people of the !Xun and Khwe.
In October of 2007 Ms Brodiaea was asked to write the play by the South African San Institute (SASI) the NGO that works with the San of the Northern Cape. The play is based upon many hours of interviews with members of the community. It is a love story set against the backdrop of the Angolan war.
The purpose of producing the play is many-fold: firstly, SASI wanted a vehicle to tell the tragic history of the !Xun & Khwe and bring greater attention to their lingering struggles.
Secondly, the play is a source of revenue to the community. Income directly helps the actors performing and artisans building set pieces, sowing costumes and making jewelry to be sold in the lobby and at an Art Exhibition at the William Humphrey’s Art gallery in Kimberley on 22 May.
Additionally, the !Xun & Khwe will own the royalties to Son of the Wind and revenue generated from performances now and in the future will benefit the community. The Elders of the community would like to build an art center one day.
Through this production many members of the community are learning new skills and getting greater exposure to the world. The actors, and others are learning to be responsible and accountable and the value of working toward a goal regardless of the struggles along the way. But most importantly, this production is something the community is proud of – it is bringing Hope.
The Northern Cape Department of Sport Arts & Culture is the principal funder of the production. Son of the Wind is a 2010 Legacy Production for the Northern Cape and if it goes well the province is considering touring it.
However at the moment SASI is in need of more funding in order to produce the Son of the Wind and is currently seeking donations.
