2007 Flower Report

21 August 2007

This year promises to be another fantastic flower season after the good winter rains. The first of the flowers were out in early August, with the best showings so far being in the more southerly areas closer to the Western Cape border.

The central parts of Namakwa however are in bloom, with the parks and reserves having good showings now, and the whole area is expected to get better with the late rains. Bernard van Lente, the Namqua National Park manger reported that the park itself has good flowers, but it seems as if the Skilpad section will not be as good as last year. The daisies started with a bang, but has since not increased much in numbers.

This can be ascribed to the 2 good rainy seasons in a row, resulting in lush growth of non-flowering vegetation. The park is still worth a visit though, with the access road to the park having some nice blocks/carpets of flowers along the way.
